Dealing with an accident or emergency requires you to understand the principles of first aid, know what decisions to make and have the skill to carry out appropriate care - all this while under pressure, especially if the situation involves your own pet. There is no better way to prepare for this than through training and practice.
Arrive 9am for coffee, start 9.30am finish around 5.30pm. Please bring a packed lunch. Students are required to complete some given research prior to attending the day.
This introductory course is suitable for owners, dog walkers, kennel staff, hydro therapists, doggy daycare providers, dog trainers, dog groomers, in fact anyone working within the industry!
This is an intensive one day course, and has theory and practical combined elements, and covers the following areas:
* Principles of first aid.
* Safe scene assessment.
* Normal values (temperature, pulse rate, capillary refill time, hydration, mucous membrane colour, respiratory rate).
* Recognising signs and first aid treatment of shock.
* Types of wounds and injuries and bleeding.
* Types, methods and principles of bandaging.
* Symptoms and first aid for fractures and suspected fractures.
* Emergency and trauma (unconsciousness, snake bites, stings, heat exhaustion, heat,
stroke, bloat, poison, drowning and electric shock)
* CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and rescue breathing.
* Field first aid kits & car first aid kits.
* Restraint and movement of animals.
The course includes:
* Coffee on arrival, refreshments, pre and post course electronic handouts and Certification. Please bring your own lunch.
This course meets the criteria for CPD training for the KCAI, NARCH and other associations. Students that successfully complete an assessment can also be awarded an ABC Awards Quality Licence Certificate of Achievement, accepted.

Achievement from ABC Awards.
This course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme. This means that the Canine Studies College has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Specified Levels against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.
The course itself has been designed by the Canine Studies College to meet specific learners’ and/or employers’ requirements which cannot be satisfied through current regulated qualifications. ABC Awards’ endorsement involves robust and rigorous quality audits by external auditors to ensure quality is continually met.
